Having finished the previous view of the castle from the old gun emplacements, I set off down from the heights to the harbour area below. I hastily painted two very quick half-panels (5×12″) in the teeth of the raging storm and then headed inside the breakwater to the comparative calm of the harbour proper to contemplate the castle itself from there.

I’d painted the same view, while the weather was good, the day before, so this was comparatively easy. The colours though were completely different and of course, the extraneous detail that might have been there was gone! Once more the bad weather came to my aid. Again the mysterious pinkish tone to the light surrounded the castle and the challenge was how to render the famous cliffs in anything like the subtle colours they reflected.
